“CloudCasa is a Kubernetes-native backup and DR solution that ticked all the boxes for this customer: sophisticated data protection that works at scale across multiple clusters in multiple environments, including support for stateful data and VMs.”
In 2024, a publicly traded US-based enterprise software company with over 5,000 employees and $2B in revenue faced a challenge familiar to many: rising VMware costs triggered by Broadcom’s acquisition. With its Tanzu contract up for renewal, the internal IT team sought to reduce VMware dependency while ensuring high availability and performance for critical workloads like CI/CD and testing frameworks.
Highlights
- Who: US-based enterprise software company
- What: Migrating 28 on-prem clusters from Tanzu to Palette, with CloudCasa for data protection
- Why: Triggered by Broadcom VMware price increases, goal to reduce costs, maintain availability, improve devex
- When: October 2024, ongoing
- What next: Managing clusters in Azure, dev self service with Virtual Clusters, and migrating 500 VM workloads to Palette VMO
After evaluating multiple vendors, the company selected Spectro Cloud Palette to replace Tanzu for Kubernetes cluster management, impressed by its decentralized architecture, flexibility across multi-cloud and on-prem environments, and cost-effective licensing. However, the default Velero backup in Palette lacked essential enterprise features such as RBAC and robust disaster recovery.
To solve this, the company adopted CloudCasa by Catalogic—a Kubernetes-native backup and DR solution that offered scalable, secure, and VM-aware protection across clusters. CloudCasa was integrated via a custom Palette Pack, enabling consistent deployment from within the Palette UI. Backups now run on-prem to NetApp StorageGrid and offsite to Azure Blob Storage, with AKS available for disaster recovery scenarios.
The enterprise is now on track to fully eliminate vSphere and migrate 500 VM workloads into Kubernetes using Palette’s VMO (Virtual Machine Orchestrator), with CloudCasa ensuring data protection at every step.
