CloudCasa now supports data protection for Amazon RDS
The choice for persistent storage for your cloud native applications depends on many factors including how your cloud journey started and whether your applications were migrated or developed for the cloud. Also, depending on how early you started using containers and migrated to Kubernetes, your distribution or managed service may not have offered the persistent data services you needed.
Recognizing that enterprises are using multiple storage methods for their cloud applications, CloudCasa now supports cloud databases starting with Amazon RDS. Cloud databases account for a large portion of persistent data for applications running on Kubernetes, and they require protection along with other parts of the application. Addressing both Kubernetes and cloud databases in a single backup service helps ensure consistent recovery points and it provides faster recovery times for applications that have stateful data outside of Kubernetes.
Amazon RDS Support
You can now manage the data protection and recovery for all of your RDS databases, across multiple accounts and regions, from one place! You can now create scheduled or ad-hoc snapshots of your Amazon RDS databases using the same schedule and retention policies that you use for Kubernetes. You can also automatically copy snapshots to other AWS regions for an extra layer of protection. Restore of RDS databases can be done from snapshots or copies created by CloudCasa, from RDS automatic backups, or even from manual snapshots created through AWS.
All Amazon RDS databases are supported, including Aurora. See the Amazon RDS Getting Started Guide and the Amazon RDS Restore Guide under the CloudCasa Getting Started page for more details.
Top 5 Reasons to use CloudCasa to Protect Amazon RDS
While Amazon does a great job addressing the operational and security challenges for its database services, let’s look at the top reasons you will want to use CloudCasa to further protect your applications using Amazon RDS.
- All in one data protection service – the same CloudCasa UI and service that supports multi-cluster and multi-cloud backups also supports RDS backups. No need to go to multiple consoles and manage multiple backup datasets.
- Application focused data protection – supports your Kubernetes-based applications that use cloud databases, similar to what your IT department provides for their virtual and physical server-based applications today.
- Dev/Test CI/CD support – DevOps can more easily test data protection and disaster recovery and use data sets for application testing no matter where the data is stored.
- Disaster Recovery – provides multi-region support so a single region outage won’t result in loss of data.
- Compliance and Reporting – centralized catalog and use of traditional data protection methods including snapshots, replication, and backup copies that support regulatory and compliance processes.

The CloudCasa team is also happy to announce the addition of several major new service features! Please feel free to contact the CloudCasa team with any questions, comments, or suggestions.
Region Choice for Backups
You can now choose which region you would like your data sent to when CloudCasa backs up your Kubernetes resources. This is important for customers in certain countries, especially within the European Union, who need the ability to restrict which countries their data can be stored in. It can also be used to help minimize egress bandwidth charges by keeping data within your region, or to provide additional protection by guaranteeing that data is sent out of your region. Backup destination region can be set under the Settings tab, and in the near future we will also be adding the ability to set it on a more granular basis.
Currently all storage regions are provided by AWS, but we will soon be offering a choice of providers as well.
Pause/Resume Scheduling for Backups
You can now pause and resume scheduling of defined backups, for both Kubernetes and Amazon RDS. Clicking on a backup in the dashboard will take you to the backup details page. Clicking on the “three dots” button in the upper right corner of the status summary will provide you with pause and resume options, among others.
UI and Other Improvements
Many UI improvements were made (thanks for the feedback!) but we’ve maintained the same look and feel and ease of use. Besides the many changes necessary for supporting RDS databases, UI updates include a new backup details page and the redesign of the Protection tab. We have also introduced the use of push technology in the UI, so that updates are more responsive.
Many other minor or non-user-visible improvements continue to be made, including:
- The CloudCasa agent can now be installed via a Helm chart
- Performance and reliability improvements to the agent
- Platform robustness improvements
Summary
CloudCasa, a simple, scalable, and inexpensive cloud backup service for protecting your Kubernetes and cloud native applications. Our goal is for CloudCasa to do all the hard work for DevOps and IT Ops to backup and protect multi-cloud, multi-cluster, Kubernetes applications that are also using cloud database services.
And the great news for developers is that you can start with our free backup service tier that has no limits on the number of snapshots, worker nodes or clusters and provides up to 30 days of encrypted data on secure storage. This free service tier now includes Amazon RDS protection, including snapshot management and multi-region copies.
